华语会话 (hua yu hui hua) Conversational Mandarin Elementary Basic = up to 1,000 Chinese characters, Beginner =1,000 to 2,500 characters, Intermediate = 2,500 to 4,000 characters, Advance = 4,000 characters and more
Generally speaking, each character stands for a meaningful syllable. The total number of Chinese characters is estimated at more than 47,000 of which only 5, 000 - 8,000 are in common use. Of these merely 3,000 are used for everyday purposes.
